The Baker Directory

Terms of use

Effective 2026-10-24 · Run by Margaretha Joubert, trading as The Sugarcraft Circle

The short version: The Baker Directory is a directory, not a bakery, booking agent, marketplace, payment service, insurer or guarantor. Customers and bakers deal directly with each other. Nothing here removes rights that South African law doesn't allow anyone to exclude.

1. Using the directory

By browsing, saving, contacting a baker or submitting a page, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the service. You must use the directory lawfully, and may not scrape contact details, impersonate another person, interfere with the service, submit false reports, or use the service for fraud, harassment or unlawful discrimination.

2. A directory only

The Baker Directory introduces customers to independent bakers. The Baker Directory and The Sugarcraft Circle are not a party to enquiries, quotations, orders, bookings, payments, collections, deliveries, cancellations or disputes between a customer and a baker. Money must never be paid to The Baker Directory for a baker's order.

A listing, membership of The Sugarcraft Circle, review or award is not a warranty or guarantee of identity, licensing, availability, price, quality, food safety, allergen suitability, conduct or fitness for a particular purpose. Customers must make their own checks before ordering or paying.

3. What bakers promise

A person submitting or managing a page confirms that they are at least 18, or that a parent or legal guardian accepts these terms and responsibility on their behalf. The baker confirms that:

  • the page is truthful, current and not misleading;
  • they are entitled to use the business name, photographs, logos and other material supplied;
  • photographs show work they made, and are not AI-generated or materially altered with generative AI;
  • their trading, advertising, food preparation, allergen information, labelling, pricing and fulfilment comply with applicable law;
  • they will not infringe privacy, intellectual property or other rights; and
  • they will deal honestly and safely with customers.

The baker grants Margaretha Joubert, trading as The Sugarcraft Circle a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, resize, reproduce and display submitted material for operating, promoting and archiving The Baker Directory. The baker keeps ownership of their material and may ask for it to be removed, subject to reasonable record-keeping duties.

4. Review and removal

Publication is at our discretion. We may ask for evidence, refuse, edit for formatting, hide, suspend or permanently remove content or accounts that appear unsafe, unlawful, misleading, infringing, AI-generated, abusive or inconsistent with these terms. A page may also be removed when its baker is no longer a member of The Sugarcraft Circle. We may keep relevant records and cooperate with lawful authorities. We don't promise to pre-screen every item or continuously monitor every page.

5. Ordering safely

Confirm the baker's identity and contact details, get a written quotation, discuss allergens and food handling, keep records, and use a payment method that offers appropriate protection. Never send passwords, one-time codes or unnecessary identity documents. Report suspicious behaviour promptly.

6. Availability and changes

The service may change, pause or end, and pages may become outdated. We don't promise uninterrupted or error-free operation. These terms may be updated; bakers will be asked to accept a new version before their next submission when changes materially affect their obligations.

7. Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by South African law, Margaretha Joubert, trading as The Sugarcraft Circle is not liable for loss arising from a transaction or interaction between users, reliance on a page, third-party conduct, an unavailable service, or unauthorised use outside our reasonable control. This doesn't exclude liability or consumer rights that cannot lawfully be excluded, including liability for gross negligence where exclusion is prohibited.

A baker is responsible for claims caused by their unlawful content, infringement, misrepresentation, products, services or conduct, and agrees to reimburse reasonable loss and legal costs suffered by the operator as a direct result, to the extent permitted by law.

8. Law and contact

South African law applies, and South African courts have jurisdiction, subject to any forum or remedy a consumer is entitled to use. Questions, takedown notices and complaints can be sent to the contact address.
